Back-to-School Reset Time
It’s Back to School Reset time, which means busy mornings, packed schedules, and piles of backpacks, lunchboxes, and paper. If you’re a mom like me, juggling work, kids, and home life — you know that the back to school chaos can sneak up fast.
This year, start fresh with a home reset. Focusing on three key zones that will save your sanity (and maybe even your mornings). These simple changes can be done in a weekend — and I’ll link a few of my favorite products to help along the way!

1. Back to School Reset: The Drop Zone: Entryway or Mudroom
This is where the school day starts and ends. Backpacks, shoes, jackets, sports gear — it all needs a place. In our house, we always enter through the garage, which leads straight into the laundry room. This layout isn’t ideal, but we’ve managed by separating our space into backpacks and sports equipment, which stay on hooks in the garage, while shoes go in a cabinet inside the laundry room. My kids are now tweens, so our space has evolved as they have grown.
Tips:
- Add hooks at kid-height for backpacks, coats, and lunchboxes
- Use a basket or cubby per child for shoes, gear, and quick-grab items
- Set up a small tray or command center for keys, ID badges, and school forms
2. Back to School Reset: The Homework Station
Having a go-to spot for homework helps your kids focus — and keeps papers from getting lost in the shuffle. It doesn’t need to be fancy, just functional. For a long time, my kids would use the kitchen table for homework. We kept a drawer close by with a few school supply essentials for easy access. I now have one child who likes to do homework in his room and one who likes to be downstairs. To make it easy, I created two school supply caddies that can go wherever they decide to work.
In our home, a large dry-erase calendar showing all 12 months proudly hangs for all to see. My family decided they no longer needed the wall calendar this summer and would prefer going digital. I’m hopeful we can still organized with our google calendars, but I’ve got our wall calendar on stand by just in case.
I love the idea of the Skylight or other smart calendars for your home but I’m not convinced that paying extra for the subscriptions are worth it, if we can get by with our apple and google calendars. If you have a smart calendar and love it, let me know!
Tips:
- Use a rolling cart or caddy stocked with supplies (pens, scissors, calculators)
- Create a quiet corner at the dining table or in a bedroom
- Hang a corkboard or dry-erase calendar nearby for assignments and reminders
3. Back to School Reset: The Snack + Lunch Prep Zone
Busy mornings and hungry kids after school? This area saves time for you and them. My kids pack their lunch daily. To make it easy I prep all the items when I get home from the grocery store and store them in our refrigerator drawer or pantry. That way, they can grab and go in the morning. When they get home from school, they know exactly where to go to grab a snack.
Tips:
- Dedicate a shelf or drawer in your pantry just for grab-and-go snacks
- Prep lunch items in bins or clear containers so everything’s easy to see
- Keep reusable containers, sandwich bags, and water bottles in one cabinet or basket
Do a Back-to-School Nightly Reset
Before you head to bed, reset each zone for the next day. Ask the kids to help — it’s a great habit-building exercise and sets everyone up for a smoother morning. I always suggest packing bags and any sports equipment the night before, to make sure we don’t forget anything the next morning.
